Treasure Chest Thursday -- 1910 Postcard

The treasure that I am sharing today is another postcard from great-grandma Piggott's stuff that thankfully she saved. I sure am glad that mom sent me this stuff because I was running out of treasures to share!

This one is particularly special because it was written to my great- grandma from her mother on her first Christmas as Mrs. William C. Piggott.

It is postmarked Dec 24, 1910 from Bloomington, Idaho and addressed to Mrs. Wm C Piggott, Pegram, Idaho.

It reads:

Dear Daughter
May you enjoy the
present xmas with
hope of a happier
one next year.
We will be nearly
alone this year &
our aim will be
to strive to be
better prepared another
year. Lovingly mother

Get Well Card to Hazel Meek

This is the second post involving the Meek - Tarratus pieces of family history that I found. You can find the first one here.

Here we have a get well card that was sent to Hazel from Rosa (Ling?).

She wrote quite a bit inside and I will attempt to translate it.

Dear Hazel, Didn't hear from
you all this a.m. & I am
just praying no news
is good news. It is so hot
here that we can't hardly
stand it today & raining
too. Surely will be glad
when we can get some
relief. I do hope you will
be feeling fine & know
whats your trouble
when we do hear.
Wm Seth still here but
is going down on the
coast for two or three
days this next week.
Marie said she had
written you also Birdie
& Sara hope you have
gotten by now as
I know you need mail
while there. Am so sorry
they couldn't help John.
Wish there was something that could be
done for him. They are really fishing in
the pool now every day __ __ __ comes
to want to fish & they are catching the
fish. To hot for fish for me.
Hope you will let us hear from
you as soon as you can hear something.
I have no help in the store right now
except Gladys. Birdie gone to Mobile to
see Geo & Earnestine & Gladys is planning
on going to Montg next week. I guess I
can manage some way. We love you
all lots. Love & prayers.
Yours Truly

Treasure Chest Thursday -- 1909 Postcard to Hazel Madsen

Last week I received a package from my mother that I had been anxiously awaiting probably for about a month. This package contained letters, postcards, photos, Christmas Cards, and other precious items that belonged to my great grandmother, and this is just a portion of the memorabilia that she left behind. It seems that great grandma never threw anything away; (my kiinda gal!) The rest is divided between my aunts and uncle. Gee, I didn't even think to ask mom if she kept any.

I will have to find a small "treasure chest" to put these precious treasures in. The first item I would like to share is a postcard that great-grandpa sent to great-grandma for her birthday before they were married.

The postcard is stamped Point of Rocks, Wyo. Apr 13, 1909 and is addressed to Miss H. R. Madsen, Montpelier, Idaho. It reads:

It is still
blowing so that
we canot work
at anything it is
as bad as
Biron (Byron)

Treasure Chest Thursday -- Grandma's Cookbook

Today's treasure that I want to share is a cookbook that once belonged to my paternal grandmother. She gave it to me sometime in the eighties. It is filled with recipes contributed by the LDS Relief Society ladies of the Paris Ward in Paris, Bear Lake, Idaho.

There are six of grandma Smedley's recipes inside. My favorite one is her applesauce cookies. We just call them "grandma's cookies". I didn't notice until the other day that one of my aunt's put a recipe in there titled "MOM'S ORIGINAL SPICE CAKE". The 'mom' she refers to would be my maternal grandmother. I had no idea that grandma Dunn had an original spice cake recipe. You know I am going to have to try that -- spice cake is my favorite!
